54 days and a wakeup

Dear Mom & Dad,

Greetings once again from Vietnam.  Well, I have got my orders.  I am going to Ft. Benning, Georgia.  The orders are back at base camp and will probably be here either today or tomorrow.  A guy came out from base camp yesterday and said that he saw my orders back there and that I'm going to Ft. Benning.  He didn't notice however, how much of a drop I got.

I am not pleased about going to Ft. Benning so I put a 1049 in for an extension of six months to Vung Tau.  Vung Tau is the in-country R&R center here for III Corps.   There is only one problem.  I may be too short to get it.  You are suppose to have at least 90 days left in country.  The personnel sargent said that my chances are very slim but it wouldn't do any harm to try.  So, if my 1049 comes back approved before I go home, then I will come back to Vietnam for six more months.  If it comes back disapproved or not at all, then I will go to Ft. Benning.

I have been giving a little thought lately to re-enlisting for three years.  If I thought that I could be stationed in Bangkok for 18 months after here, I would re-enlist for three years.  I would really like to go back to Bangkok.  This is something that I will have to look into.  This time, I will be sure to get everything in writing so as not to get screwed like I almost did in Germany.

I really haven't made up my mind one way or the other.  I will have to look into the advantages of staying in the Army three more years or getting out.  To tell you the truth, I am really undecided as to what I want to do.  I will let you know more about this as time goes on.  Regardless of what I decide, I will still have a 30 day leave in April so I will be able to explain to you more in detail what I decide on.

All in all, things are going well.  We are right in the middle of Tet and as of yet, no sign of a communist offensive.  I don't think there will be one this year.   Last year, they caught everyone by surprise.  This year, we are ready for them if they should try anything.

Things are really quiet.  Time is dragging but that's natural.  By the way, what's the latest on my stereo?  Have you heard from "Stereo Studio"?   I would like to have the stereo I had in Germany fixed by the time that I get home.   For if I should go to Ft. Benning, I would like to take it with me.  From what these guys tell me, Ft. Benning is nice.  Those that have been there say so, that is.   Of course, it's too far from home to get home on a weekend but I might be able to get to Florida and see Cliff.

Oh well, in any case, I will see you in 54 days - which will be great.  So don't worry about me.  It's almost over.  I am feeling great.  As a matter of fact, I haven't felt this good in a long time.  I have lost a little weight and I am getting plenty of sleep.  So, I am feeling great.  Well, I have to to get back to work.  Take care and . . .

By for now!

Love,
Bob
