I spent some time with the Engineers at your base camp - 1967. I did some ambush patrols out in the plantations near by. I got some photos. It was great to look at your photos. I did some party time in Xuan Loc. The 11th Cav. was a great bunch of guys. They took a lot of shit and kicked ass. I admire them very much.

I served at Fort Knox during 1954-1955 long before the outfit became famous in Vietnam, but I would like to be associated with the brave men who served in more dangerous times. And I would like to know if any of my buddies are still around.

Mr. Bob, you have done a great job, providing us fellow Americans with much-needed help and info with your website. I also want to thank you for the honor roll of my father, 1st Lt. Ponder Ray Sims, Troop K 3/11, killed in action July 21, 1967. It brought me to tears; the pain of losing my father will always remain with me. Deep in my soul is the heart of little girl still searching for her Daddy. Thank you again for giving me a little hope to cling to, for although I know that he is "gone" he will always remain a large part of my life. I will be forever indebted to him, and to all the other brave men who forever gave so much and wanted so little. God Bless All of You.

I was with the Regimental Hq Troop 68-69.
I think one of the best things anyone can do for the people who serve with the Blachorse. It was a great unit to be associated with.

I became interested in the Black Horse after watching the video my friend's dad, Sgt. Major Tom Thompson, being buried in Arlington National Cemetary. The final word from the officer were: "He was not only a distinguished and courageous soldier, but he was a Black Horse." "What is a Black Horse?" I came to this and many other sites on the 11th Armored Cavalry, and I am learning. To Black Horse Members, and all who served and gave their lives in war, especially Vietnam, I would like to say: Thank you, God Bless.

Hello Bob,
We are the family of Frank Root who served with you. We received your letter and Dennis found this web page. Sorry to inform you this way, but Dad passed away June 13th 2000 with esophigal cancer. He has two handsome son's, Tim & Dennis, wife Sandy. He didn't get to see his 2 beautiful grand-daughters born a few months after. He is kept fresh in our hearts everyday with surrounding love. We live in his home with mom and care for her as she has MS. It has been rough but we survive.
He lead a great life, became a millworker, he told of his younger years, roadrunner stories and his rowdiness. Full of humor and a fighter within, especailly with Cancer. He tried and we believed in him but two days after Dennis & I quickly arranged our wedding because we knew what was to happen, he lost his battled and ended it with more comfort.
Thank-you for writing to us and hope to keep in touch. We are looking through the pictures of you all and remembering a great father, soldier and husband.

Mr. Hersey; Came across your K Troop 11 ACR Website while looking for information on Cavalry. Although I remember seeing and hearing the Blackhorse rumbling by me in the late 60's while going through BCT at Fort Knox. It wasn't until I rejoined in the mid-70's that I became a member of the Blackhorse (K Troop) then stationed in Bad Hersfeld, W. Germany. I was there as an "older" L.T. with the likes of Cosby Saint, SA, Thomas White (he was a Major in the RS-3), and a number of other Blackhorse Vets who went on to bigger things in and out of the military. Many fond memories, and many not so fond, but all a part of me still. Especially since I'm still soldiering after all these years.

Thanks for all the info and pictures. I also served in Vietnam in 1970 and '71 with the 27th Trans. Bn., 2nd Trans. Co. After all the C rations we loved our cooks when we had time or was near a mess hall. Thanks.

My unit was in direct support of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. In 1966 to 1967 my unit was the 27th Engineer Battalion Combat. We were across the street from the 7th Surgical Hospital.

Dear Bob,
Thanks for the pictures of Vietnam. It was very interesting. My dad was k.i.a. 04-17-69. He was a SFC in A Troop, 11th ACR, 1st. SQ. and I am very proud of him. He got the Vietnam Silver Medal and two Purple Hearts. Thank you for your service for all of us in Vietnam. You did a very good job there you can be proud of.
My daddy was there that day with General White (now Secretary of the Army), when he and 9 other men of the 11th Cav. died.

Dear Bob, I went to some time your sites just again. And I found the following: "W.W. II In France, Belgium and Germany the Battalion won five battle streamers for campaigns in: Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe. Two other representatives of the 11th Cavalry, the 11th Armored Group and the 11th Cavalry Group also saw combat in Europe. The 11th Cavalry Group were awarded three battle streamers for Normandy, Rhineland and Ardennes-Alsace. The 11th Armored Group distinguished itself at the Battle of the Bulge when it controlled the entire sector once held by the 102nd Division." Could you me say more to the 11th Armored Group? She was attached with the 6th Armored Division as of middle of April 1945. The Headquarters of the 11th Armored Group were as of April 15th, 1945 in Rochlitz, Saxony; as of May 14th in Apolda, Thuringia. Both towns are in the eastern part of Germany. Activities were task of the 11th Armored Group within the Military Government. Military Governor my home town Apolda was for example a Captain Marcinkowski (11th Armored Group).
Does give After Action Reports, staff lists, Photos etc. of the 11th Armored Group? If yes, where? Who can help? Please, they go to my sites: http://www.koch-athene.de

I enjoyed reading about the 11ACR. I was attached to them just prior to their pull out of Europe and assigned to Vietnam. 1962 to late 1964. Late 64' was when they were pulled from Europe to go to Vietnam.
